King Benjamin Project

Rabbit Production February 2003

There are dozens of families in the San Juan Chimbas Stake who raise a few rabbits to supplement their diets. Sergio Olivera is looking at rabbit production as his main source of income. He has 12 adult female and 11 male rabbits; and owns 16 cages and is having another 14 built.

Sergio is utilizing the talents of another entrepreneur to construct cages for his rabbits.

Sergio's short-term goal is to have 30 adult females continuously reproducing. He is adding to and completing the area where he keeps them, which upon completion will cover some 30 square meters. Between selling rabbits for their meat; and selling surplus offspring to families who want them, he feels he can be very successful. Sergio has a very enterprising mind, he has identified several individuals who already specialize in rabbit production in San Juan; and has learned much from them.

Sergio is an instructor at the Stake Resource Center. He has purchased several boxes of worms, which are making compost out of the rabbit droppings. There is a market in San Juan for this composted material to be used in home gardens, etc. Sergio and Claudio Manrique (see Bakery) work together as business partners. There are no funds needed at this time to help this project.
